Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Can a baby born with fetal alcohol syndrome, if the father is an alcoholic?
I’m dating an alcoholic man, he wants children, is there any risk of my child coming down with FAS?
Pregnant women who drink too much alcohol have to get help with alcoholism before all that drinking affects their unborn child.
FAS is caused by the use of alcohol a woman during her pregnancy. There can be caused by a male. However, alcohol lower sperm count in men and it is more difficult to become pregnant. Since I read this question I feel as if I have to say. Please do not bring a child into the worl and reared in a household with an alcoholic father. Please have your boyfriend to seek help before planning a child with him. Good lucky!
Characteristics of fetal alcohol syndrome?
Not physical features, I mean like developmental. Are they behind… etc. Does this last their whole life? Is the baby fine after they are born?
My niece (step, she was my sisters husbands daughter from his first marriage) was fetal alcohol syndrome. She was not born with some the the physical features, such as cleft palate, but had the wide bridged nose and some of the other facial features, she was born with the typical seizures. However, if you want to know about how they are, yes, a fetal alcohol syndrome child is often delayed developmentally in academics. Sometimes brain damage and/or mental retardation set in, but not always. Many times they are delayed in adaptive skills too. It can be difficult for them to learn simple tasks such as washing ones hair or brushing ones teeth. One characteristic is the awful tantrums they will throw for no apparent reason. I mean hitting others, throwing desks and chairs in school, beating up on other children for no apparent reason. The tantrums seem to decrease in frequency, but may increase in severity and intensity as the child gets older. And there’s an inability to make decisions, even the simplest ones such as do you want a hotdog or hamburger for lunch. Staring episodes are common, esp when a decision is needed to be made that the person finds difficult to make, and a short attention span too. Hope that helps.
